Farmers markets or regional markets draw some of the most diverse groups of people and whenever you bring together a varied group of people, you know you are in for a treat. This opportunity to mix and mingle with people from different cultures and backgrounds adds the entertainment to your shopping trip. Sometimes especially if you go early you can wander amongst the stalls and feel as if you are in a totally different world than you engage in for your normal day. There are treats for all your senses: you see the vibrant colors of the fresh produce and the warm textures of fresh baked bread; you can hear jokes and stories being told in any number of languages; you can smell the delicate fragrance presented by buckets of flowers; you can taste the treats prepared for sampling; and you can touch not only all the weird and wonderful roots of the food you will buy, but your roots as well. Way back somewhere we all have someone who worked the land and grew the food we need as individuals, families and communities. As individuals we use food to nourish our bodies, as families we gather to share in our experiences, and as cultures we often use food to identify our place in the world.
